“If one expects repayment for kindness, then there is an ulterior motive.” This means that when we do good deeds and offer kindness, we should do so out of pure intentions and not with the expectation of getting something in return. If we expect a reward for our kindness, it shows that we maybe have an underlying purpose.

如果一个人付出希望得到善意的回报，那么就有不可告人的动机。”这意味着，当我们做好事和提供善意时，我们应该出于纯粹的意图，而不是期望得到回报。如果我们希望我们的善意得到回报，这表明我们可能存在潜在的目的。

In "Liaofan's Four Instructions", it is said: "If one does good deeds without being attached to the concept of goodness, then whatever achievements are made will all be complete. If one is attached to goodness in the heart, although one may be diligent throughout life, it will only amount to half a good deed."

《了凡四训》中说：“如果一个人做好事而不执著于善的概念，那么无论取得什么成就，都是完整的。如果一个人内心执著于善，虽然一个人可能一生都在努力，但这只相当于善行的一半。”

When Han Xin was young, he was so destitute that he even had no food to eat. An old woman who was rinsing silk floss by the river saw Han Xin's hungry appearance and shared her meal with him. Han Xin was very grateful and said to the old woman that he would definitely repay her in the future. But the old woman was angry and said, "A real man should be able to support himself. I gave you food only out of pity for you. Do I expect your repayment?" The old woman's behavior was pure benevolence without expecting anything in return. A truly kind person does not do good deeds for the sake of recognition or reward. They do it because it is the right thing to do.

韩信年轻的时候，穷得连吃的都没有。一位在河边洗纱的老妇人看到韩欣饥饿的样子，便和他一起吃饭。韩欣非常感激，对老妇人说，以后一定会报答她的。但老妇人很生气，说：“一个真正的男人应该能够养活自己。我给你食物只是出于同情。我指望你报答吗？”老妇人的行为是纯粹的仁慈，不指望任何回报。一个真正善良的人做好事不是为了得到认可或奖励。他们这样做是因为这是正确的事情。

If we expect something in return for our kindness, it becomes a transaction rather than a genuine act of goodness. We may start to calculate what we will get in return and lose sight of the true meaning of kindness.
